Meanwhile, the team tries to deal with their grief over Kutner's sudden suicide. Gill of The Sunday Times felt that the show had "lost its sense of humour". Maureen Ryan of the Chicago Tribune wrote, "House used to be one of the best shows on TV, but it's gone seriously off the rails". Flavorwire describes it well as the "unlikable genius antihero." Meanwhile, the story of how House and Wilson met for the first time is revealed. A painter's (Breckin Meyer) undiagnosed illness begins to affect his work, but he is unable to see his art is suddenly grotesque. He is brought to Princeton-Plainsboro Hospital, though he claims that he is getting better.

Meanwhile, Thirteen struggles with her own diagnosis of Huntington's and helps to treat an executive assistant (Christine Woods) with a similar personality to her own. They'll tell you that House went on secretly keeping tabs on his former fellows, who would go on to successes and struggles that feel tailored to their characters. The range speaks to the cast's colorfulness — and to the breadth of tones the show pulled from. And if anyone ever does put together a reunion series, they ought to have plenty of ideas. Executive producer Katie Jacobs was a huge fan of In the Heights, Miranda explained in an interview with Playbill, and she offered him a part the writers had tailor-made for him.

However, just as they are about to dismiss his case, the patient's condition takes a drastic turn for the worse, and House grapples with his past and his own personal beliefs. The team takes on the case of a 16-year-old factory manager (Emily Rios) who collapsed when her lungs suddenly filled with fluid while at work. The teenager informs House and team that she has been an emancipated minor ever since her parents died. Meanwhile, Foreman asks for House's permission to work on a clinical trial and House rejects his proposal. In an effort to prove himself capable of working without House's supervision, Foreman takes on his own pediatric case. But when the unexplained illness brings the child (Kyle Red Silverstein) to the brink of death, Foreman is left questioning his ability to work free from House's custody.

Ranking Every Single Season Of "House" From Worst To Best.
House, not wanting to think he couldn't see it coming, reaches the conclusion that it was murder, until he looks through a bunch of photos and finds one showing a lone Kutner with a blank expression - in contrast to the smile he wore in the other photos when he was with other people. Although House was originally scheduled to be shown on Tuesdays during Season 5, at mid-Season, the time slots for House and American Idol were switched on the prime time schedule, putting House's new episodes in the 8 PM EST slot on Mondays. Later, FOX Broadcasting Company stated in this Network Prime Time Schedule [1], that House would premiere its fifth Season at 8 PM EST on September 2, 2008. However, the first episode didn't premiere until two weeks later, September 16. An older woman, Charlotte (Colleen Camp), who has been taking care of her husband Eddie (Meat Loaf) for the last six months, is rushed to Princeton-Plainsboro for treatment after collapsing at Eddie's deathbed from respiratory failure. The case is further complicated as Eddie's condition improves while Charlotte's deteriorates.
House – Season 5, Episode 1
House and the team take on the case of a woman (Judith Scott) who collapsed in the middle of a cooking class. When they learn that the patient gave up her career as a highly renowned cancer researcher in order to pursue her own personal happiness, the members of the team question their own happiness (or lack thereof). Meanwhile, Thirteen begins to suffer serious and life-threatening reactions to her experimental Huntington's disease clinical drug trial, and Cuddy retaliates against House and gives him a taste of his own medicine. Edelstein was disappointed at the circumstances, but she swiftly moved on to new opportunities. She told TV Guide that she liked getting to stretch herself artistically and play new kinds of characters after seven years in the same role.
In the Season 4 finale, after a massive bus accident left House without recollection of the accident, he and the team put the pieces of his memory together and discover Wilson’s girlfriend Amber was on the bus with him and was fatally injured. Eventually, Chase plans to propose to Cameron, but when she learns about his plans, she starts making excuses not to go away with him. Shortly thereafter, House takes over the planning of Chase's bachelor party, hiring a stripper and hosting it at Wilson's apartment. While at the bachelor party, Chase does a body shot off of Karamel, a stripper suggested by the Amber hallucination who was also at Wilson's bachelor party for his third wife.
But House soon realizes that Amber is dangerous, and that she is not helpful to the case when Cuddy calls him to let him know that his diagnosis was wrong. The team goes to the hospital after the bachelor party ends suddenly to figure out what is wrong with their patient — after they sober up. Nursing-home worker Morgan (Judy Greer) fakes illness to get House's attention after the home's pet cat, Debbie, sleeps next to her. It seems that Debbie only pays a visit to people if they are about to die and does so with alarming accuracy. While House dismisses Morgan as a nut job, he is intrigued by her theory on the kiss-of-death cat, and sets out to disprove it. When Morgan falls seriously ill, he and the team are forced to get to the bottom of both mysteries.
No one — including Kal Penn — expected the way his character, Kutner, would go out. He told TV Guide, "You want to be ahead of your audience. If you're shaking things up after the audience has asked you to shake things up, it's probably too late." After its first five seasons, House was included in various critics' top-ten lists; these are listed below in order of rank. It's not a show about addiction, but you can't throw something like this into the mix and not expect it to be noticed and commented on.

There have been references to the amount of his consumption increasing over time. It's becoming less and less useful a tool for dealing with his pain, and it's something we're going to continue to deal with, continue to explore. The season ends with alternating shots of Cuddy, Foreman, Taub and Thirteen enjoying Cameron and Chase's wedding and Wilson driving House to a sanatorium, which House willingly enters. Cameron reveals that she was keeping a frozen sample of her deceased first husband's sperm in case she never found a new person but still wanted to have children. Not long after Kutner's suicide, House develops severe insomnia and begins to hallucinate, seeing visions of Amber.
An agoraphobic man (Todd Louiso) falls ill and refuses to leave his home to be treated at the hospital. Therefore, House and the team go to his home to figure out what might be wrong. Cameron takes charge of the case as she had treated the patient in the past and she and the team figure out ways to treat him at his home. However, the patient's condition worsens and it becomes difficult to treat him at his home.
However, the birth mother (Vanessa Zima) has a strange rash on her arm, so Cuddy takes on her case as both a doctor and a potential mother. Thirteen takes a woman (Angela Gots) with whom she had a one-night stand to Princeton-Plainsboro after the woman has a seizure in Thirteen's apartment. House and the team take on her case, House using it as an opportunity to explore Thirteen's personal life. Thirteen ends up finding out the patient only slept with her to get to House, who had been rejecting the woman as a patient for many years. An organ donor's organs are responsible for the deaths of several patients, and the team works against the clock to save the last two recipients. Meanwhile, House hires private detective Lucas (Michael Weston) to spy on Wilson, as well as his team, during the differentials.
Friend and Lerner, who are business partners, had been offered positions when the series launched, but turned the opportunity down. After observing the show's success, they accepted when Jacobs offered them jobs again the following year.[31] Writers Eli Attie and Sean Whitesell joined the show at the start of season four; Attie would stay on the show's writing staff through the series finale, which he co-wrote. From the beginning of season four, Moran, Friend, and Lerner were credited as executive producers on the series, joining Attanasio, Jacobs, Shore, and Singer.[30] Hugh Laurie was credited as an executive producer for the second[32] and third[33] episodes of season five.
It soon blooms into a romance, but House feels it is affecting their medical judgement and tries to make them break up. Wilson slowly starts to recover from Amber's untimely death, but begins to reevaluate his life and to contemplate resigning from his post at the hospital. House's original regret over his role in Amber's death seems to have worn off as instead of being supportive, he merely tries to convince Wilson that he is overreacting to the situation. The fifth season of House premiered on September 16, 2008 and ended on May 11, 2009.
The character type has arguably worn out its welcome through clumsy handling and overexposure, but at its best, it's responsible for some of TV's most charismatic and perversely charming leads. You can see them on everything from The Mentalist to How to Get Away With Murder. When shows come to an end too soon — and when we love them, it always feels like it's too soon — it's hard to resist imagining what might have happened next. And with House, fans aren't the only ones who couldn't help thinking about alternate season nines and far-future epilogues.
Throughout House's run, six of the main actors have received star billing. They kiss and agree to try being a couple.[115] Throughout season seven, House and Cuddy try to make their relationship work, but Cuddy eventually breaks it off because of House's addiction. House struggles to deal with this and, in the season-seven finale, drives his car into Cuddy's living room in anger. As Lisa Edelstein left the show before season eight, after this incident Cuddy leaves the hospital and House never sees her again.

She later stops tormenting House when she decides that making his life miserable won't do any good. At Cameron's urging, the team takes the case of a suicidal man (Martin Henderson) who suffers from excruciating chronic pain—pain that mirrors House's. Meanwhile, Cuddy discovers that caring for her new foster baby leaves her little time to run the hospital; and Foreman and Thirteen continue to explore their complicated relationship as they work together on their Huntington's disease drug trial. A man (Željko Ivanek) takes over Cuddy's office and holds House, Thirteen, and several patients hostage, demanding a diagnosis. To make sure that the doctors are not going to sedate him, he forces Thirteen to act as a guinea pig for his treatments. House has to find a way to end the standoff before Thirteen becomes seriously ill, and before SWAT start their assault.

Our commitment to being good stewards of the environment guides us in every decision we make as a company. From our manufacturing partners to the materials used in our products, we seek to prioritize our planet and people over profits. We are proud of the fact that all of Geometry’s products are made from post-consumer materials - helping to reduce waste in our environment and conserve water during the manufacturing process. Gehry designed and built the Norton House on a very small budget. Having previously experimented with cheaper and more standard materials, he was able to utilize their ‘everyday-ness’, and with them, create something unique. Using things like chain-link fence, standard kitchen tiles, industrial staircases, he created an important piece of architecture with very little money.
For the Stahls, it became the blank screen on which they projected their dreams of a life together, a place to build a future, a family, and a house like no other. Due to the ever-changing health and safety guidelines and the small, intimate nature of the museum, all policies will be re-evaluated on a regular basis and updated as needed. Shulman’s famous seven-minute exposure captures the house and its sprawling city backdrop. In March 1954, Clarence “Buck” Stahl and Carlotta May Gates drove from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and got married in a chapel. It was as conspicuous as it was forbidding, visible from the couple’s house on nearby Hillside Avenue. “This lot was in pure view—every morning, every night,” Carlotta Stahl recalled. Locals called it Pecker Point, presumably because it was a prime makeout venue.
In addition to our printed guidebook, a free digital version can be used on visitors’ own personal smart devices. Guidebooks are available to visitors for onsite use. We believe that good design and performance should go hand-in-hand with sustainability. A Geometry product not only enhances its surroundings through its beauty and function, but also makes less of an impact on our planet through the use of post-consumer recycled materials. Anyone who spends time in the kitchen knows how important a dish towel is.
What Buck and Carlotta Stahl got when they drove up to Woods Drive in 1954 was more than they ever envisioned. “They simply built their dream home,” their children write. I love the feel of them and especially love that they’re made from recycled plastic bottles & are anti- microbial. Pricier than typical kitchen towels but I’ll only purchase them ongoing for myself & as gifts. Barnsdall Art Park has accessible parking spaces on top of the hill in the Hollyhock House motor court, located between the Visitor Center (former garage) and the house. There are additional accessible parking spaces located on the Upper Road. About two months after their dash to Las Vegas, the Stahls decided to drive up to this mystery spot and have a look around. They found themselves gawping at the entirety of Los Angeles spread out below in a grid that went on for an eternity or two.
Geometry Towels Are They Actually Worth The Price?
I’ve never had such an inexpensive towel actually absorb water without much fuss. In no time I was back in business finishing up our dinner. When it came time to clean, the towels worked flawlessly at drying all my dishes.
Formally, the building is a group of offset boxes connected by interior and exterior staircases, each with a deck area above. The ground floor, which houses two bedrooms, a studio, and a garage, is subtly set back from the street wall. The volume itself is wrapped in bright blue tiles. The second floor, which contains the main living spaces including a kitchen and living space, is set farther back in an effort to maintain privacy. This space opens onto a terrace overlooking the ocean. The third floor, which includes another bedroom and an external staircase to the roof terrace, has its own deck as well.

Designed in 1984 for artist Lynn Norton and writer William Norton, Frank Gehry’s Norton House is known for its eccentric form and eclectic materiality. Much like his own house in Santa Monica, the Norton House is a sculptural assemblage of everyday materials. The Nortons had in fact seen Gehry’s house in 1983 and obviously approved of his experiment. So, a year later, they commissioned him to design their house on a narrow, ocean-facing plot of land on Venice Boardwalk. With the commission, Gehry continued his exploration of creating architecture with everyday materials, low costs, and sculptural forms.

Spiderlings disperse aerially and, consequently, wolf spiders have wide distributions. They can be found in a wide range of habitats both coastal and inland — anywhere they can find insects to eat! These include shrub lands, woodland, wet coastal forest, alpine meadows and suburban gardens. There are more than 100 genera and about 2,300 species of wolf spiders; 200 species live in the United States. This family belongs to the order of Araneae, which includes all known spiders.
Identifying common spiders
If you see them inside your house, put down glue traps to catch them. They don’t generally breed indoors, so if you see one in your basement, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have an infestation. You might not see them, but they’re all around you — and that’s a good thing. Your garden spiders, and learn how to entice more into your yard.
Where Do Wolf Spiders Live?
Identifying features of wolf spiders are their eight eyes arranged in three rows, banded furry legs, and a flattened head. The medium-sized brown spiders grow 0.4” to 1.4” (10 – 35 mm) in size. The American house spider is a common tan to dark brown spider. The small brown spider has a bulbous abdomen, long legs, and the appearance of a brown widow spider.
Spiders of Alabama: 58 spiders you should know - AL.com
Spiders rarely bite more than once, so multiple bites are usually caused by insects such as fleas, bedbugs, chiggers, ticks, mites and biting flies. Many of the spiders in Maryland possess venom, but the black widow is the only native Maryland spider that is dangerous to people. All other venomous Maryland spiders either have too little venom to affect people or their venom is specially adapted for their prey. Dark or orange-brown, domestic house spiders have a pale mark on the breastplate. Hobo spiders have brown bodies with a pattern of darker stripes. They’re predominantly found in the northwest U.S. in holes and cracks and are non-aggressive.
Size
The small yellow house spider can measure 0.19” to 0.35” (5 – 9 mm) with a leg span up to 1” (25 mm). The brown widow spider is a venomous spider with a bulbous light brown to dark brown body and distinctive hourglass marking on the side of its abdomen. The brown widow’s markings can be orange or dull yellow, and it also has colorful markings on its back. The black house spider is identified by its dark gray to black oval abdomen covered in tiny white markings.
Everything You Need to Know About Wolf Spiders
Wolf spiders typically live outdoors, but the furry brown spiders can enter homes in the fall when the temperature drops. They prefer hiding in crevices, closets, around doors, and basements. Brown widow spiders are typically found in dark, undisturbed areas of your home like behind furniture, basements, attics, or garages. Inside the homes, black widows usually lurk in dark, dimly lit places like crevices, closets, cluttered areas, basements, and attics.
Funnel weavers/ Grass spiders
Crab spiders are small, often brightly colored, and have two front legs that are larger than the others. Creepily, “They do not spin a web but instead wait in hiding for prey,” as shared by Britannica. Crab spiders are small to medium-sized spiders (1/10- to 2/5-inch long) ranging in color from yellow or red to brown or gray. They are generally dark-colored, usually brownish or grayish, with white markings.
Cellar Spider
You typically see them slung between garden plants and in forests. When the male Black House spider finds a female in their webs, the male plucks the web of the female to attract her attention. Once the male has made sure that the female will be receptive, he can safely approach and inseminate her with his palps. Eye pattern represents the first spider identification clue when deciding between families. The picture at the top of the page, for example, shows a spider with two rows of eyes. That’s the basic form for members of the nursery web spider category.
Wolf spiders are often confused with the Brown Recluse spider, however, they lack the violin-shaped marking of the recluse. Namely, the wolf spider will not use its web to hunt its prey, while the common house spider will rely on its webs quite heavily. That’s because the funnel web is effective at capturing the prey, which will trigger the spider’s senses and cause it to strike the prey and kill it.
Lycosa lapidosa will take small toads and frogs while Lycosa obscuroides has been noted biting and killing a large toad within one hour. Both species will use their venom to hunt their prey, which is mostly insects and other smaller bugs and animals. For that reason, the venom doesn’t need to be very potent to kill the prey, so it will not cause a great deal of damage to humans. Common house spiders (Tegenaria Domestica) like to hide under furniture and in corners of your home, too. It is quite a shy spider and once it spots you, it will try to run away as quickly as possible. Also called the black-footed spider, yellow sac spiders can inflict a painful venomous bite.
They do not like people and will likely scurry away when they hear your footsteps. Like their namesake animal, wolf spiders chase and leap on their prey instead of weaving a web to entrap them. Typically, their diet consists of insects like other small spiders, ants, grasshoppers, and more—though they have been known to also hunt small frogs and other reptiles. They are nocturnal creatures and will do the majority of their hunting and wandering at night. Wolf spiders use their keen eyesight, camouflage, speedy movements and high sensitivity to vibrations to help them avoid predators such as lizards, birds and hunting wasps. There are nearly 2,400 wolf spider species across 125 genera, according to the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS).
American grass spiders are a type of brown funnel weaver spider with an elongated, oval brown body. Identifying features of the grass spiders are the distinctive dark brown bands running down its cephalothorax, mottled brown abdominal patterns, and spiny, orangey legs. Jumping spiders are identified by their black, tan, or gray bodies with orangish or white markings. They are also covered in dense hairs and have thick, short legs, giving them a scary appearance. Another feature is their eight eyes in three rows, with two prominent eyes in the center.
Wolf spiders are active hunters that patrol the ground for insects, small spiders, and similar prey. They do not use webs to capture prey and actively hunt in the open during the day and night, often living by the thousands in leaf litter and grassy areas. Some wolf spiders build small burrows and defend a territory, others are free-roaming. Because they are so numerous, and such voracious predators, wolf spiders are a very important part of any ecosystem in which they occur. Female spiders may sometimes be seen with their young riding on their backs until they are independent enough to go off on their own.
You may lightly apply a broad-spectrum insecticide on the outside of your home to reduce invasion by wandering spiders. Spray under siding, in cracks and crevices, and other places where spiders may hide. Make sure the insecticide is labeled for use on the exterior of buildings.
Everything You Need to Know About Wolf Spiders
Cellar spiders are common in dark secluded places such as crawlspaces, basements and cellars. Another poisonous species, the brown recluse spider, as its name suggests, likes living the quiet life away from where the action is. The web of the Black House Spider has a ‘funnel-like’ shape, which is sometimes misunderstood as a Funnel-web Spider web. Their web is a messy-looking construction of triangular sail-like shapes, usually found stretched in the corner of the walls and windows. Somewhere in the web is a funnel-shaped entrance to the nest, where the spider spends most of its time, waiting for prey.

Descriptions and pictures of the eight-legged creepy crawlers will help you know the spider species and how to deal with them. Much like other creepy crawlies, it prefers damp locations like basements and cellars. Oddly, it’s known for vibrating rapidly in its web when disturbed—a key giveaway for what type of spider it is. People assume because these spiders are large that they must be dangerous to people. They stay in their webs, eating insects they capture and rarely, if ever, are found off of them.
Types of House Spiders
They will conduct a thorough inspection to identify the full extent of the problem. Once the situation is properly identified, the appropriate control measures can be taken. When using any pesticide to control insects, it's always best to enlist a professional, who can recommend the best course of action for your specific home and problem. If you choose to go about spraying on your own, be sure to read and follow all label directions closely. Make sure that the site (indoors, along the foundation, outside, etc.) is listed on the label, and use only products labeled for spiders or nuisance pests.

The affected area will generally begin to cramp and other symptoms such as sweating, nausea and vomiting may occur. Jumping spiders have the best vision of spiders (have large middle eyes), seeing objects up to eight inches away. They wander at night in search of food and are ground-dwellers commonly found under rocks and debris. Fishing spiders can “skate” across water and can dive underneath to capture prey. Wolf spiders are alarming because of their large size and rapid movements. These spiders are not dangerous to people and should be left alone.
Related Pests
The wolf spider is not aggressive, however, it will inject venom freely if continually provoked. Symptoms of its venomous bite include swelling, mild pain and itching. Though usually considered harmless to humans, wolf spider bites may be painful. Another notable difference between the two is also that the wolf spider has much more hairs than the common house spider.

Compact, furry, and with distinctive markings, the jumping spider can be found on walls and windowsills, particularly where insects are prevalent. It has very good eyesight, is active during the day, and is known for its quick, accurate jumping to catch prey. Fishing spiders are the largest spiders in the Upper Midwest (1-inch long). With legs spread out, some fishing spiders cover as much as 4 inches. Cellar spiders are 1/3 to 1/4 inch long, pale gray to light tan in color and have long delicate legs (resembling the daddy-longlegs). They are brownish or grayish small to medium-sized spiders (about 1/8- to 3/8-inch long) and have a rounded abdomen and a small cephalothorax.
Orb weaver spiders
Both wolf spiders and common house spiders carry venom, but neither species’ venom is potent enough to pose any threat to humans. The black house spider is also related to the gray house spider (Badumna longinqua). This species is slightly smaller and has a pale gray body and legs. However, the furry house spiders are relatively timid and tend to avoid contact with humans. Despite this fact, most people cringe at the sight of a common house spider.
It will not use webs for hunting, because it will rather rely on its ambushing skills and its excellent eyesight. The wolf spider is hairier than a house spider, and it is usually much larger than the domestic house spider as well. The wolf spider can reach sizes of up to 35 millimetres, while the house spider can only reach the size of about 11 millimetres at most.
Cellar spiders are common in houses throughout North America and are completely harmless. However, you may notice the small spider with its thin arching legs in the corner of rooms. These spiders spin messy, irregular-shaped webs high up in corners of rooms and other undisturbed places. You’ll often find the black house spider lurking in wall crevices, crawl spaces, behind baseboards, and window frames.
Insignis is a messy-looking construct of irregular sail-like shapes. There is a funnel-shaped, silken retreat, usually in the middle or corner of the web, where the spider spends most of its time waiting for prey. At night the spider comes out to repair and add to the web, often just adding new silk over the old.
Harvestmen is a large order of spider-like arachnoids with thousands of species in the order. Harvestmen are typically small brown creatures with long, delicate arching legs. Some harvestmen species have brown bodies with a mottled pattern on their backs.
The cellar spider also goes by common names like vibrating spiders, carpenter spiders, and daddy long-legs spider. However, the name daddy long-legs is also given to other arthropods like harvestmen and crane flies. The American house spider is common in homes from Florida in the south to the northeastern and northwestern United States. When possible, Crumbley advocates for catching spiders and releasing them back outdoors. “The recluse can cause serious damage to people,” says Pereira.
With some slight differences, they look very similar to eachother, and to wolf spiders. For example, think writing when hearing the formal name, Dolomedes scriptus. The spider has a distinct W markings on the abdomen, outlined in white. The bottom row consists of four small eyes, the middle row has two very large eyes and the top row has two medium-sized eyes. Unlike most other arachnids, which are generally blind or have poor vision, wolf spiders have excellent eyesight. Despite this, they cannot move their eyes and rely on their wide vision to see.
Wolf spiders can give quite a fright to homeowners across the U.S., but are they friend or foe? You’ll often find harvestmen in sheds, garages, basements, and crawl spaces. Black widows can be found in homes throughout the United States, especially in warm states like Arizona, Florida, Texas, and Nevada.

Libertarians such as Ron Paul argue that what you put into your body is your business. It is the laws that produce victims — and they are the users themselves. Of course many victims result from crimes committed to get money to buy drugs. The libertarian argument is that if you decriminalize drugs, as some European countries have found, you remove the profit motive, and drug use falls.

These thoughts occurred as I was watching "The House I Live In," the documentary by Eugene Jarecki about our War on Drugs. Its primary effect has been to assure a steady flow of non-violent, non-dealing drug users to our prisons, many of them for mandated sentences of five, 10, 20 or 40 years — or life. Hearing his sentence of 40 years for using crack, a young offender says flatly, "I messed up." Let that be a lesson to him, although he may be dead by the time he can put it to use. The problems are deeply entrenched, rooted in decades of policies, practices, and societal perceptions.

The film recognizes drug abuse as a matter of public health, and investigates the tragic errors and shortcomings that have resulted from framing it as an issue for law enforcement. It also examines how political and financial corruption has fueled the war on drugs, despite persistent evidence of its moral, economic, and practical failures. But there’s a growing recognition among those on all sides that the war on drugs is a failure. At a time of heightened fiscal instability, the drug war is also seen as economically unsustainable. Beyond its human cost at home, the unprecedented violence in Mexico provides a daily reminder of the war’s immense impact abroad, and America has at last begun to take the first meaningful steps toward reform. At this pivotal moment, the film promotes public awareness of the problem while encouraging new and innovative pathways to domestic drug policy reform.
The Grand Jury Prize winner for documentary at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, Eugene Jarecki‘s look at American drug policy—The House I Live In—began with a desire to reacquaint himself with his family’s old housekeeper Nannie Jeter. In examining the impact of the War on Drugs in states across the country, The House I Live In explicitly depicts a war that is not merely rural or urban, or black or brown or white, but American. Apart from its societal critique, one of the unique aspects of “The House I Live In” lies in its storytelling. Through personal anecdotes and interviews with individuals directly affected by the war on drugs, the film highlights the human cost that’s often lost in larger conversations about drug policy.

Polls have indicated that Americans are markedly concerned about migrants entering the country from Mexico, which have surged under Biden’s presidency. The president has called for Congress to change immigration policy to give him the power to turn back more arrivals, but the Senate rejected a recent bipartisan deal to do so in part due to the opposition of Donald Trump. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee allowed the separation of migrant families during his first four years in office, and is reportedly planning mass deportations of undocumented people if returned to the White House. All hot-button issues have a level of subjective insight and conjecture behind them, but I do believe it would be hard to poke holes in what Jarecki has unearthed. Eugene shows us how Richard Nixon’s 1971 ushering in of the “war” was almost exclusively a campaign tactic and yet still remained a two-prong attack of enforcement and treatment until his second term required a hardline stance for victory.
But as the Jareckis moved towards New York City courtesy of well-earned success, their want for Nannie to accompany them in hindsight might have been the worst thing that ever could have happened to her. In 1971, Richard Nixon declared a war, couched in terms that suggested that the onslaught of attacks would target and eliminate the presence of drugs in our country. But the so-called War on Drugs, it turned out, was given a deceiving title.
In 2010, Jarecki directed Freakonomics, a documentary inspired by the bestselling book. I had never heard of the 100 to 1 law, never knew the police could confiscate money and property for nothing more than probable cause, courtesy of RICO. Between profiling and a lazy workforce content to bust low-level criminals to bolster numbers, good police work has been rendered all but extinct while the public’s perception of law enforcement turns to distrust and fear. Simon dealt with these issues beautifully in The Wire and listening to the people involved here shows just how seminal a work of political commentary through art his HBO program was.
